INKtober Monster #1 - Sneezy Sneak

The season of ink is finally upon us! Welcome to INKtober! We have Jake Parker to thank for this illustrious holiday where we take on the challenge of completing one inked drawing per day for the month of October. I really enjoyed seeing all of the posts last year and even completing a few images of my own to mark the occasion. However, this year I've decided to jump into the deep end and really try creating one drawing per day. But I wanted to find a special way to put my own spin on it.

And thus INKtober Monsters was born! For the month of October I'll be creating a new Monster each day in ink. I figured something with a touch of Halloween might really be a fun topic. The really cool part is that I want you guys to be the ones to help me define what these things will look like. If you'd like to participate here is the few bits of information you must provide me.

1. Your name
2. The name of your creature
3. Three physical characteristics of your creature - No more, no less
4. A brief bio for your creature

It's that simple! Just post your creature suggestion in the comments below or on my Facebook page. I'll then randomly select Monsters to tackle as each day goes by in October. Sound fun? I'm hoping it will be! I can't wait to see what sort of stuff you guys will help me come up with! Lets dive in with our first creature of the Month!

Name:
SNEEZY SNEAK

Three Physical Characteristics:
- Covered in mushrooms/moss
- Has antlers
- Has bad allergies

Bio:
"This monster lives in the forest and preys on unsuspecting hunters. He fools them using his antlers and lures them deeper and deeper into the woods until they're all alone. Sadly his allergies make it pretty tough for him to sneak up on people. He's not a very good monster, he's the misfit of his herd." - Sarah Bowlin

SOLD
Original Ink Drawing FOR SALE - $20 Shipped (Contact for Purchase)

And that's our first Monster of the season! I really hope you guys enjoy this as much as I'm going to like breathing life into these guys. Stop back by tomorrow to see what new creature we'll be concocting together! Happy INKtober!

Piggies and Beer

Hey everyone! This update I wanted to show off some of the stuff I've been working on for work recently. If you've followed this blog at all you've probably noticed that I've been working for the few years at a slot game company. Well, recently some of the games I've worked on were shown to the public so I figured I'd post a few images from the projects.

The first set of images above is from the sequel to a game I did the art for a couple years ago, Bier Haus. I didn't get to work on the entire game this time but I was asked to rework some of the symbol and character art. It was a blast to try and inject a bit more personality and life into the characters. It's more stylized then before but I also felt it made it feel a little more fun. My wife isn't a fan of the Heidi symbol at all and I'm not sure why. Ha!

The next game is one of the first toony projects I've ever worked on to completion. Rich Little Piggies 2 was a labor of love for me and my buddy, Joe Feliciano. Joe helped me out with some of the initial preproduction/concept work, background painting and a bit of animation. The game really came together really nicely and we're both pretty stinkin' proud of it! If you find yourself on a casino floor you should seek it out and give it a spin!

Below is a sampling of some of the conceptual work I did for the project. There are a good deal of scraps but these were a few that I scanned or saved to show.

And that's all I have to show for this week! As always I love the feedback if you have it! I'll be back with another post next Friday. Till then you can catch me on Facebook and Twitter via the links at the top of the page. Have an awesome weekend! Keep scribblin'!

Overdue Sketch Dump

Ah, the long overdue sketchbook dump. I've totally dropped the ball on my blog updates over the summer. Sorry about that! Truth be told I haven't been creating as much personal work either. But the temperatures are falling and I'm starting to get back into scribbling as often as possible. Something about cooler weather makes me feel more creative.

Regardless I hope you enjoy this mess of an update! It's not much but it's something! Ha! I'm going to make an effort to update this blog every Friday so be on the look out for another post next week. Until then, you can follow me on Twitter and Facebook. And let me know what you think of my scrawls! I always appreciate feedback.

Take care and be awesome!

Viking Jawlz

A few days ago I did a painting demo for a friend of mine. After a couple hours of walking him through my thought/working process we ended up with this guy. You might recognize him from a scribble I made in my sketchbook months ago. I debated whether or not I should take the extra time to clean it up and finish it off but since I'm not using it for anything I'll probably let it go. Maybe if I ever find myself in the mood to polish and render something.

Hope you guys like him! So many butt chins on this art blog! Ha! I've gotta start leaving those behind. Take care and thanks for looking!

Rude Moose Radio

A friend of mine commissioned me to create a really fun logo/illustration for his podcast recently. Ok, so he started the commission in April and I finally just got around to finishing it up. Ha! Hey, life is busy in the spring and summer! I don't often take freelance work these days but if it seems like something that might be fun I'll usually take a look at it. This was a blast to work on and it even gave me an opportunity to knock around in Manga Studio 5 on the Cintiq.

The guys over at the podcast seemed to like it and I hope you do as well! If you like wrestling, video games, beer and audible yucks then you can check out the podcast by clicking here. Drop them some feedback on their Facebook page! I know they'd love to hear some love!

I'm way past overdue for a massive sketch dump but I'll be honest, I've been a bit lazy with the personal work as of late. Between a crazy pig game I've been creating at work and all the visitors that have been coming to see us in Chicago, I haven't had the most free time. I'm trying to grab traction where I can though. So be on the look out for more soon! Thanks for not completely giving up on me! Ha!

Thanks again for checking in! Take care and keeping being awesome out there!

PS: I've created a new portfolio to showcase my work. I got beta access to Dunked.com a while ago and have been testing it out. I took some time a couple weeks ago to really see what I could do with it. Not bad at all for a free solution. Take a look!

"Breto's Hammer" Working Process

If you've followed my blog in the past then no doubt you'll recognize these "WIP Shots" that I've posted from my latest finished illustration, "Breto's Hammer." I try to make a habit out of creating these sort of timelines when I work because I find it fun to look back on and I figure someone might find something helpful in looking at them. This one in particular skips a lot of steps but I thought I might try to walk you through the process quickly anyway.

You'll notice that the process is pretty similar to how I work on other things as well. I really had to find my way with this one because I wasn't completely confident in where I was going. All I knew is that I liked the charm of the initial sketch and wanted to paint it up. The rest I just sort of made up as I went!

1. This is just the first initial sketch from my sketchbook. I really liked the pose and sense of character that you get from the guy. Never mind the anatomy issues! Ha!

2. After scanning the sketch in I started blocking out some environment ideas as well as laying in some value to get some things cemented in there. Even at this point, when I'm still trying to figure out what I'm drawing/painting, I'm making note of where my light is coming from to some degree. Trying to get a bit of mood in the piece early as well as bringing a bit of dimensionality to the image. I also tend to think about the foreground, middle ground and background during this time by limiting certain values for different areas. As you can see I'm reserving darker values for the foreground, for instance.

3. At this point I'm getting a bit hasty and just want to start seeing some of the color relationships that I have in my head in the actual image. So I lay down a bunch of local color. I really wanted to play up the relationship between blue, orange and pink. Sometimes just getting some colors in is enough to get me really excited about where a piece is going. You'll also see that I've started to continue to render things out here and there, developing the forms.

4. Continued rendering, cleaning up elements, playing with shapes. I liked the idea of creating a sort of circle frame around Breto that would keep the viewer revolving around the image compositionally. I liked the idea of these big bold, dark shapes guiding your eyes towards the dwarf. I'm also trying to knock out some of the white in favor of color, reserving the white later for more dramatic areas that I want to draw the eye towards.

5. There's a pretty big leap here and a lot of different changes that too place. I started addressing some of the initial anatomy issues as well as reshaping some of the different shapes I was playing with. I also dramatically punched the lighting to try and give it more of an impact. It was at this point that I really felt I knew where the image could be headed. As you can see I stretched the image out a bit so I wouldn't feel so contained and I really felt it help the composition breathe more. I'm continuing to render, keeping in my the way the light is affecting the form and the color relationships as well. I try to really play on the warm/cool relationships in my work. I'm also trying to find my way around the background in the hopes that I'll give the environment a bit more depth.

6. Towards the finish the polish just keeps coming and I keep adjusting and rebalancing values, colors, etc. The more I'd polish and render I'd find that I wasn't doing the overall image any favors. So I started blurring out parts of it to really push some stuff back and get the viewer to focus on Breto more. I darkened the "circle frame" I'd created in the environment to really help push that forward more as well. You'll notice some texture detail added as well to help sell the environment. The bits of snow blowing around was something I liked but I'm not sure how well it worked.

And that's the basics of my image! To be honest I kinda phoned in the background a bit and I think I could of added more environmental stuff to really help sell it more. I drug this image out for way too long though. I only worked on it for a few nights but I took month long breaks in between touching it! Ha! If you have any questions feel free to drop me a line. It's a messy process but I love the discoveries it often brings. And each time I paint something it becomes slightly more refined.

I hope some of this was helpful! Stay tuned for a sketchbook update soon and thanks for looking!

Breto's Hammer

It seems I've taken the last couple months off from posting on my blog! I'm really sorry about that! As Spring turns into Summer I'm always struggling to find time for art in between all the visitors and outdoor stuff that goes on with all the great weather. Rest assured I'm hoping to find myself posting more regularly again soon. So thanks for your patience.

I do bring new art for you though! Well, finished art at least! My work is sponsoring an art show so I needed to scramble to get a piece together for it. This guy was far enough along that I didn't have to push to hard to just get him up over the edge to finish. There are still things that I would have liked to push and work on more but I think this gets the job done. I really wanted the dwarf to be the focal point and I think working on the rest so much might have detracted a bit from him.

After working on this off and on I'm just ready to move on to the next thing. I'm interested to see how people like him. Perhaps I'll do a print series of the fella if people are interested. If you'd like to see the HiRes version just click here!

Thanks again for stopping by! Remember you can always follow me on Twitter (@ryanbowlin) if you want to see what other things I've been up to! :: cough :: Animal Crossing :: cough ::

Sketch Dump: Life Drawing, Pirates, Dragons 'n More!

I've been sitting on my sketches for the last month in the hopes that I'd actually do more. Sadly, I haven't had as much time but I feel like I've still been drawing a ton thanks to the sort of projects I've been taking on at work recently. There has been a lot more drawing and painting for me these days at work. It's been nice but I also don't seem to feel the urgency to create personal work when I'm getting my creative juices flowing at work.

Excuses and excuses! I need to try and do a better job of getting my nose down in my sketchbook and getting some work done. I hope you like this mess of sketches anyway. I think there are some fun things in here. I'm particularly drawn to the pirate scribbles as I've been considering a pirate themed story for the future. I'm sure you'll be seeing more of them!

There's a lot still that I'd like to say but I'll keep this post short for now. Thanks for looking and be sure to track me down on Twitter and Facebook! I love to hear from the people who take a gander at my stuff. Thanks again and I'll try and find my way back here soon!

Space Mutt

I haven't abandoned you guys! I've been busy at work recently and haven't been doing as much of my personal work. But a friend of mine gave me some of his Photoshop brushes and I thought I'd mess around with some of them a bit tonight. Hope you enjoy the sketch! I'll be back soon with a more substantial sketch update! So stay tuned!

Old Crow

Yesterday after work I took some time to try out a new brush I found within the massive collection I've acquired over the years. I seldom use different brushes but I thought this one was kinda fun and kept my painting style a bit looser then I usually work. Tonight I brought it home and pushed it just a bit further on the Cintiq. I'm still not used to working on this thing and really need to find a better balance to painting with it. I get really hasty when I use the Cintiq for some reason and stop thinking as much. It seems to effect my "eye" as well for some reason. It's very strange.

At any rate, I hope you guys like my Game of Thrones inspired scribble! No character in particular but I just imagine he's one of the many defending on The Wall. Looking forward to more of Season 3 and further entrenching myself into the audiobooks while painting away at work!

Spaceman

After I uploaded that mess of sketches last night I got the itch to slap some paint on one of the portrait doodles. After a couple hours of messing around this fancy space guy happened!

I find that I'm more likely to do little impromptu painting sessions now that I have my new Cintiq. For some reason it just feels so much easier to jump into something and quickly get down something that looks pretty nice. I just have a tough time knowing when to stop!

At any rate, I hope you guys like him! Until next time... see ya on the interwebz!

Scraps

Well, I promised a spread of sketchbook doodles and I hope you'll find that I delivered. Ha! Lots of randomness the last couple weeks in between the work I've been doing for my day job. You'll find a bit of gestural figure drawing in there too.

I always feel like these posts are all over the place but that's what a sketchbook is supposed to be, right? Ha! I hope you find something to enjoy in my madness. Take care and thanks for stopping by!
